Assessments and Review Services

> Plant-wide/Facility energy assessment

BASE engineers have directed over 700 comprehensive plant-wide energy assessments of commercial, institutional, municipal, and industrial facilities. These customized assessments include:

  • A clear and comprehensive evaluation of all energy-consuming systems at the facility
  • Detailed energy billing data analysis
  • Benchmark facility’s energy consumption
  • A detailed engineering and economic feasibility study of all potential energy projects, including:
  • Energy conservation
  • Energy efficiency
  • Demand response
  • Renewable energy and self-generation
  • Potential sources for project financing
  • A comprehensive roadmap for a sustainable business

Our engineers have the capability to perform ASHRAE Level I, II and III audits depending on the needs of the customer.

> Targeted energy assessment

BASE engineers have the expertise to evaluate a wide variety of industrial processes and building systems. Our systems approach ensures that local modifications and enhancements to existing equipment do not adversely affect secondary processes and systems. Targeted Energy Assessments typically include:

  • Developing detailed measurement protocols to help characterize system’s energy performance
  • Identifying system energy inefficiencies (through measurements) and potential solutions
  • Developing a detailed engineering and economic feasibility study of all potential energy improvement opportunities

Our systems expertise includes, but is not limited to:

  • Heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
  • Chilled water central utility plants
  • Hot water central utility plants
  • Industrial steam generation and use
  • Industrial and commercial refrigeration
  • Ovens and furnaces
  • Compressed air generation and use
  • Industrial automation
  • Renewable energy
  • Self-generation

> Water conservation assessment

Identifying water conservation opportunities is an important service BASE has performed for commercial, agricultural, food processing and industrial facilities. Our engineers make recommendations, then analyze the embedded energy savings that come from implementing those recommendations.

> Design review for energy efficiency

BASE has helped over 150 facility owners and design firms review non-residential, new construction designs for energy efficiency. Our engineers bring extensive field experience and knowledge of state-of-the-art, energy-efficient technologies to each review. BASE evaluates the engineering and economic merits of the proposed system and building enhancements over state or industry standards. Our design review process includes:

  • Initial discussion with facility representative and design firm
  • Review of preliminary design documents to identify potential for energy efficiency
  • Establishing baseline energy consumption based on industry standard or state code/standard
  • Evaluation of the engineering and economic merits of proposed improvements

Because of our extensive experience, we can develop baselines when none are available which we have done numerously.

> Simulation of buildings and processes for energy efficiency

Using proven process and building simulation software, we perform detailed hourly simulations of the energy usage of entire buildings and systems. With packages such as eQuest™, EnergyPro, EnergyPlus, MotorMaster, AirMaster, Pump Simulation Assessment Tool (PSAT) and others, we utilize these softwares/tools to:

  • Simulate existing and proposed building or process operations
  • Determine system inefficiencies
  • Estimated potential energy savings

> Cogeneration, Self-generation, renewable energy assessments

Our team of mechanical and electrical engineers provides detailed and customized feasibility studies for cogeneration, self-generation, and renewable energy projects. Leveraging their extensive field experience, our engineers can:

  • Identify and quantify recoverable energy at the facility
  • Evaluate the potential engineering and economic merits of all applicable on-site generation technologies
  • Identify and quantify all available funding to help finance on-site generation projects
  • Perform detailed lifecycle cost analysis to compare proposed alternatives with the “do nothing” option

> Benchmarking

A natural result of BASE’s wide-ranging experience with energy systems, our extensive database provides a reliable means of assessing standard practices for various types of facilities. These include large commercial, institutional, municipal, industrial, and high-tech facilities. By comparing and benchmarking against these standards, we can identify energy performance deficiencies and potential improvements. Our engineers are also proficient with benchmarking tools developed by third parties, including:

  • EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager
  • BEST-Winery: Benchmarking and Energy and Water Efficiency Savings Tool
  • CalARCH
  • Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) Database
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory: High-Performance Buildings for High-Tech Industries
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory: Energy Efficient Cleanroom

> Evaluation & monitoring of carbon footprint

BASE services in this area include:

  • Identify and clarify emission-reduction goals of the customer
  • Calculate facility’s carbon footprint
  • Identify and quantify projects that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Identify and recommend sources for carbon credits
